With our different technical devices being used everyday, at some point we question their age and whether to buy a new one. Holding on to something way past its prime, might put your device in jeopardy, besides missing out on new technology.

Operating systems for devices actually reach an end of support date, where there will not be software updates, technical assistance, nor security fixes. At that point, new programs and hardware will not function on an older device. Devices have a lifecycle too! 

Depending on usage and maintenance, the average lifespan of an Apple computer, iPhone, and iPad is typically between five to seven years, receiving updates and security patches. Then, classified as vintage, they still offer limited repair options and security updates for a lifespan of up to ten years. 

Microsoft provides support and servicing for products within the Fixed Lifecycle Policy for a minimum of ten years, meaning five years of Mainstream Support, and up to five years of Extended Support.

Android phones have an open-source operating system, however the various manufacturers often don’t offer a standard fixed commitment of Android OS updates. A few of the companies like Google and Samsung offer up to seven years of OS updates, while other companies offer between two and five. 

When an update is available for any device, it is best to go through the process as soon as possible. Not only new app features are available, but they also include security updates and bug fixes to keep you safe. For whatever you choose, you can search on the company’s website for that device’s model, to see whether it is supported for the latest operating system, servicing and repair.

When purchasing a new device, it may be wise to get the latest or at least last year’s model. When calculating the cost over seven years, it’s beneficial to have the newest technology, and not have the data on your device at risk.
